What if one program could give someone a paycheck, build their confidence, and make our city more beautiful at the same time? That is exactly what Clean Streetz does.
How Clean Streetz works
Clean Streetz is The Sparrow’s Nest employment initiative for neighbors who are displaced, experiencing homelessness, living in shelters, or living below the federal poverty line. Twice a week, Clean Streetz crews head out to clean city streets, picking up litter and waste to keep Athens looking its best.
The results speak for themselves. Clean Streetz has served 1,950 employees, and crews have collected more than 1,190 bags of trash from our streets.
More than a job
For many participants, Clean Streetz is the first paycheck they have earned in a long time. It is also a chance to rebuild the habits that lead to steady work: showing up on time, working as a team, and taking pride in a job well done.
Just as important, Clean Streetz changes how people see each other. When neighbors see crews working to care for downtown and the streets around them, it breaks down stereotypes about homelessness. When participants see the difference they make, they begin to see themselves differently too.
Part of a bigger path
Clean Streetz works hand in hand with our other programs. A participant might get a Georgia ID through Social Services, pick up a pair of work boots, grab breakfast at Food for Friends, and take Breaking the Cycle classes on their way to long-term employment. Each step builds on the last.
How local businesses and neighbors can help
- Sponsor a crew: Businesses can help fund wages and supplies.
- Donate supplies: Work gloves, trash grabbers, safety vests, and work boots are always needed.
- Hire a graduate: If your business is hiring, we would love to connect you with motivated workers.
- Give online: Every gift helps put another neighbor to work.
