Imagine trying to apply for a job, rent an apartment, open a bank account, or pick up a prescription without any form of identification. For many people experiencing homelessness, that is daily reality. IDs get lost, stolen, or ruined by weather, and replacing them takes money, paperwork, and a stable address that many simply do not have.
A barrier most people never see
A Georgia ID often requires a birth certificate. A birth certificate often requires an ID. For someone without either, it can feel like a locked door with the key sitting on the other side. Add the cost of fees and transportation, and the path to getting back on your feet can stall before it even starts.
How we help
Through our Social Services Ministry, our team meets with clients one on one to understand their needs and help them take the next step. That includes help obtaining:
- Birth certificates
- Georgia photo IDs
- Prescription medications
- Bus tickets
- Work boots
- Diaper bank access
- Referrals to other local agencies
Since 2015, The Sparrow’s Nest has helped provide more than 4,400 birth certificates and 3,000 photo IDs. Each one opened a door that had been closed.
What an ID makes possible
With an ID in hand, a person can apply for jobs, sign up for programs like our Clean Streetz employment initiative, access benefits, and begin searching for stable housing. It is a small card that carries a big message: you are known, and you matter.
When to visit
Social Services is available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 745 Prince Avenue in Athens. Please note that we are not able to provide financial assistance for rent, utilities, or hotel stays, but we are happy to connect you with partners who may be able to help.
